Any content in this thread will be provided in as much detail as possible in accordance with NDA restrictions.
I have been following the development of Dust 514 quite closely and the whole concept of a cross-platform game intrigued me. Even more awesome the fact that it is being done on EVE Online, the best damn MMO in Space today. HOORAH!
While I cannot divulge too many specific details about the game itself, I can describe my experiences so far.
First, a bit of history. I was brought up around PCGÇÖs and never owned a console as a child. The very first console I owned was a 360 which was purchased about 4-5 years ago (maybe longer). Naturally I prefer the PC to a console and very often got involved in heated debates about why PCGÇÖs are better for gaming than consoles. I would say I am predominantly an FPS gamer with a strong FPS background including games such as Q2, Q3, SOF, SOF2, UT3, CSS, GA GǪ the list goes on. Naturally I was sceptical about the whole GÇÿFPS on a consoleGÇÖ choice. Having played other FPSGÇÖs such as COD/Halo on the 360, I was somewhat apprehensive about Dust 514 on the PS3 and like many other gamers, was angry at CCP for choosing the PS3 over the PC in what would seem to be a clearly logical choice given that EVE is a largely PC platform MMO.
So I waited a bit, continued to keep my eyes open for more information, and then Fanfest 2012 landed. This was perhaps the game-changer for me. After seeing how far the game had been developed and how playable it was, I was literally speechless. I wasnGÇÖt fortunate enough to be there for the keynote speech, but after watching the demonstration of Dust 514 AND EVE working in harmony, I was sold. I expect many other felt exactly the same way after watching the orbital bombardment piece, I jumped up and screamed!
This was the moment I had hoped for, and this was the moment I decided that I would sell my 360, and buy a PS3. Let me be clear, Dust 514 is the ONLY reason I bought a PS3, there are no other games at the moment that I intend on buying for it. A couple of months after Fanfest 2012 had concluded, the Mercenary Pack was introduced which allowed gamers to gain instant access to the beta as well as obtain some cool gifts. This was the point I entered the Dust 514 beta and gained first-hand experience with the game.
I had no problems getting registered, downloading or installing the beta, everything went quite smoothly and was able to join a match within minutes. Sadly the NDA prohibits me from talking about my experiences any further at this point, but I can say that you will not be disappointed.
Dust 514 is shaping to be everything I had expected, and I hope that for anyone undecided about getting involved in it, this thread helps you make your decision.
One thing to keep in mind. It is a beta, and it is still in development.
I will do my best to answer any questions you guys might have.

Perhaps you can answer this one:
Call of Duty is lone-wolf style, but team play can help. Battlefield relies on team aspects, but not everyone's on the same page. MAG actually gives rewards for team-oriented actions, but it's not mandatory.
Where does Dust fall on this scale? Do people actually coordinate and work together?
Well I think this falls entirely down to the person who is playing and what their play style is. I would say that Dust creates the opportunities for all types of these play styles to facilitate as many play styles as possible.
How was that? |
